A revival of a 35-year-old Kanjivaram silk saree, Pavazhavalli is a tribute to the beauty of tradition, thoughtfully reimagined for today. Named after Pavazhavalli Thayar (Mahalakshmi) of Kanchipuram, this coral-hued saree takes its name from pavazham, the Tamil word for coral, a fitting name for its striking colour. The rust-toned body is adorned with classic kattams (checks), framed by exquisite Kai Korvai borders with intricate Adai weaving and delicate zari pakshi motifs. In the original saree, the pallu featured two bands of zari motifs. For this revival, our master weaver has thoughtfully expanded this to four bands, adding richness while preserving the character of the original design. The saree is paired with an arakku blouse fabric, an addition that was not part of the original. Woven with remarkable skill and dexterity by our master weaver, Pavazhavalli honours the aesthetics of a cherished 35-year-old saree while introducing subtle contemporary elements.
